Humectant

Emollient

An ingredient that smooths and softens skin by filling gaps in the outer skin layer. Emollients include ceramides, squalane, and plant-based oils.

Occlusive

An ingredient that forms a physical barrier on skin's surface to reduce moisture loss. Petrolatum and dimethicone are classic occlusives.

AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid)

A category of water-soluble exfoliants, such as glycolic and lactic acid, that help loosen and remove dead skin cells at the surface.

BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid)

An oil-soluble exfoliant — mainly salicylic acid — that can penetrate into pores to help clear congestion. Commonly used for oily or acne-prone skin.

Niacinamide

A form of vitamin B3 used in skincare for its wide range of reported benefits, including improving skin texture, tone, and the appearance of pores.

Retinol

An over-the-counter vitamin A derivative associated with supporting cell turnover. It is one of the most research-backed cosmetic ingredients but can cause initial irritation.

Ceramide

A lipid (fat) molecule that occurs naturally in skin and helps maintain the protective outer barrier. Synthetic ceramides in products are designed to replenish this barrier.

Antioxidant

A class of ingredients, including vitamin C and vitamin E, that help neutralize free radicals — unstable molecules associated with environmental skin damage.

Broad-Spectrum SPF

A sunscreen rating indicating protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Dermatology organizations generally recommend daily use of broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher.

The Core Ingredients, Explained

The following ingredient types show up repeatedly across cleansers, serums, moisturizers, and sunscreens. Getting familiar with these categories will make navigating new products significantly easier.

Humectants — They Pull Moisture In

Hyaluronic acid is probably the most recognized humectant. It's a naturally occurring molecule that draws water from the environment and deeper skin layers to the surface. It works best when applied to damp skin and sealed with a moisturizer.

Glycerin is another widely used humectant — often less expensive than hyaluronic acid and equally effective at attracting moisture.

Emollients — They Smooth and Soften

Ingredients like squalane, ceramides, and plant oils act as emollients. They fill the microscopic gaps between skin cells, making the surface feel smoother and more supple. Ceramides are especially notable because they mimic the skin's natural lipid barrier.

Occlusives — They Lock Moisture In

Occlusives sit on top of the skin and reduce water evaporation. Petrolatum (petroleum jelly) is one of the most effective occlusives studied. Dimethicone, a silicone, works similarly and has a lighter, non-greasy finish.

Exfoliants — They Remove Dead Cells

AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) like glycolic acid and lactic acid dissolve the bonds holding dead skin cells together. They work at the surface and are water-soluble. BHAs (beta hydroxy acids) — primarily salicylic acid — are oil-soluble, allowing them to penetrate into pores, which can be helpful for congested or acne-prone skin. Both types can increase sun sensitivity, so sunscreen use is especially important when incorporating them.

Vitamin C (often listed as ascorbic acid or sodium ascorbyl phosphate) is a widely researched antioxidant that may help protect against environmental stressors and support an even skin tone over time. Vitamin E (tocopherol) frequently appears alongside it, as the two are thought to work synergistically. Niacinamide (vitamin B3) is another versatile ingredient associated with improving the appearance of pores, uneven tone, and skin texture.

Retinoids — They Support Cell Turnover

Retinol is an over-the-counter retinoid derived from vitamin A. It's associated with supporting skin cell renewal and is among the most studied ingredients in cosmetic dermatology. It can cause dryness and irritation, especially when starting out, so gradual introduction is commonly recommended. Prescription-strength retinoids are a separate category and require guidance from a healthcare professional.
